If you have a surgical procedure scheduled and are thinking ahead to your recovery and post operation rehab you may be considering the use of scar massage or scar therapy to ensure your scar is the best it can be...but when is the best time to start scar therapy?!
The best time to start your scar therapy is after 8 weeks post surgery. Prior to this your wound will be going through a complex healing process and will be fragile, inflamed and tender.
You are likely to see the best results if you start your scar therapy after 8 weeks BUT before 16 weeks post op as cellular activity in the scar is still high during this period. Scars treated during this window have softer, more flexible collagen which has recently been laid down to close and support your new wound, there is also an increase in blood supply to the area to support natural healing and change to your scar.
Although between 8 and 16 weeks is the ideal time to start your scar therapy, I have had huge success with scars much older and more mature than this...scars that I have worked on that were 25 years + still have seen both aesthetic and physical improvements to their scar, scar tissue and physical and mental symptoms associated with their scar so its never to late to get started!
if you know when your surgery is planned be sure to book in your scar therapy prior to this to ensure your rehab is as smooth and effective as possible.
If your wound is still open (fully or in a small area), if it still has scabs on the surface, if it is infected or if you or your medical team suspect you may have a haematoma or are receiving treatment for cancer your scar therapy may not be able to start until these have healed and improved fully. If you are unsure if it is safe for you to start scar therapy please get in touch for advice.
